Fonthill Branch Renovations

The Fonthill Branch opened in 1987 and is the main service point in Pelham. There have been no significant renovations in the nearly forty years since the building opened. The proposed expansion will work within the building’s existing footprint, retrofitting the main level and expanding usable space and function in the basement.

LPPL strives to help our community imagine possibilities. Share your feedback on the proposed design and improvements.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the cost of the project?

The estimated cost, based on the current design, is $5,075,000.

How is the project being funded?
Funding will come from different sources, including:

Grant funding: In 2024, $200,000 was awarded from the Ontario Trillium Foundation toward accessible shelving designated for the renovated branch. Grant funding will continue to be sought as opportunities arise.

Municipal funding: The Town of Pelham has expressed support for the project and is determining how to fund the project.

Fundraising: A capital campaign is being mounted to support the project.

When will construction start?

Construction is dependent on funding. When the funds are confirmed, dates will be set and communicated.

How did you come up with this plan?

Community surveys, use patterns, staff and community input, demographic and growth information have informed the plan to expand and renovate the library in Fonthill.

The building is nearly 40 years old and, to address growth in the community as well meet AODA regulations, more space is necessary. Without increasing the footprint of the building, the renovation of the basement level will enable approximately 3000 more square feet of public space on the main floor. The addition of an elevator will make the building accessible.

How is parking being addressed?

Currently, staff parking has been secured offsite to help alleviate some of the parking congestion. The parking and available spots may be considered as part of the overall design project.

How will I access library services during the closure?

Library customers can visit library branches in Fenwick, Vineland, and Beamsville. LPPL’s Bookmobile will also provide satellite service at different locations in Fonthill on a set schedule. LPPL cardholders can also use their LPPL card at any library in Niagara and use reciprocal borrowing at St. Catharines and Niagara Falls public libraries.
