Forget “shhhhhh!”—we want you to get LOUD!

Libraries are often thought of as quiet, passive spaces. While libraries continue to offer spaces for reading, learning, and reflection, they are also vibrant community hubs for dialogue, creativity, connection, and civic participation.

October is Canadian Library Month, a month-long celebration that raises awareness about the essential role libraries play in the lives of Canadians, fostering cultural engagement, digital literacy, and freedom of expression.

Here are five ways to get involved:

1. Show Up
Use your library card—if you don’t have one, get one! Attend a program (check out the online calendar). Try a new service. Spread the word about all the collections, services, and programs available. Usage shows need and helps secure essential funding and support.

2. Share Your Story
We want to know: why do libraries—and LPPL—matter to you? Fill out a postcard at any branch or complete a short online form.

3. Celebrate Literacy
Design a bookmark inspired by your favourite book in the third annual Bookmark Design Contest. There are three categories: kids, teens, and adults. Winning designs will be professionally printed and available at all branches.

Pick up an entry form at your local branch or get a printable version here. Submissions can be dropped off at all branches or sent by email (programmers@lppl.ca) until October 31.

4. Speak Up
Libraries are not only places to visit, but institutions worth speaking up for. Municipal elections are coming up on Monday, October 26. Make sure libraries are part of the conversation. Ask your local candidates about their support for public libraries and community spaces.

Join the Library Board!
LPPL will be looking for new board members for the 2027 – 2030 term. During Ontario Public Library Week (October 18 – 24), stop by a Library Board Drop-In Information Session to meet a current board member, ask questions, and find out how to get involved.

Fleming Branch: Monday, October 19, 6 – 7 pm
Maple Acre Branch: Tuesday, October 20, 6 – 7 pm

Applications will be posted at Lincoln.ca and Pelham.ca later this year.
